“Rate my cable management” usually invites a verdict on what the camera can see. That misses the harder questions. Does the charger still reach? Can the desk rise without pulling a plug? Can you remove one device without dismantling the bundle? Is the floor clear? A setup deserves a high score only when it works after the beauty shot.

The direct answer: score one point in each of the 10 checks below. A setup with 8 to 10 points is strong, 6 to 7 is usable but unfinished, and 5 or fewer needs a functional reset. Any automatic-fail safety condition means fix first and score second.

What does a cable management score actually measure?

This score measures 10 observable behaviors, not personal taste. Four checks cover routing and safety, three cover movement and access, and three cover maintainability and visual control. Black raceways and perfectly parallel wires are optional. A cord that stays relaxed through real use is not.

The framework borrows its priorities from official workstation and cord guidance. OSHA’s computer-workstation checklist asks whether feet and legs have enough clearance, while NIOSH identifies cords across walkways as an office hazard. OSHA’s electrical rules also require protection from pinch points and strain relief so pulling force is not transmitted to terminals. Those principles matter more than whether a cable sleeve matches the desktop.

Which 10 checks belong in the scorecard?

Give one point for each “yes,” with no partial credit. The binary format keeps the rating useful. A cable either crosses the floor or it does not. A standing desk either reaches both presets without tugging or it does not. You can improve the score in a second pass.

How do you score safety before appearance?

Inspect the power path first and stop if you find any of three automatic fails. Those are visible damage, a cord in a walkway, or tension at a plug. Unplug and replace damaged consumer cords according to the product manufacturer’s directions. Do not hide damage inside a sleeve.

OSHA says flexible cords should be protected from sharp corners, projections, doorways, and other pinch points. Its rule also calls for strain relief at fittings so a pull is not passed directly to joints or terminal screws. CPSC’s household guidance identifies six observable extension-cord characteristics and says four apply broadly: minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief, proper polarity, and proper continuity.

This is a household organization scorecard, not an electrical inspection. If a receptacle, plug, power strip, or cord is hot, sparking, discolored, loose, or damaged, stop using it and consult the manufacturer or a qualified electrician. Cable organizers control position. They do not repair electrical equipment or increase its rating.

Does the setup still work when the desk and chair move?

A moving setup earns the point only after five complete cycles. Raise and lower the desk, sweep each monitor arm through its normal range, roll the chair in and out, and connect the device you charge most. Watch every plug and every place where a cable changes direction.

The motion test matters because sit-stand furniture is meant to change position. A NIOSH-hosted scoping review examined 53 articles, including 47 experimental trials, and concluded that sit-stand desks reliably change behavior even though health outcomes were mixed. In other words, movement is the product’s core behavior. A cable route that permits only one height defeats that behavior.

Can you remove one device without rebuilding everything?

A maintainable bundle releases one cable in less than 60 seconds without cutting a fastener. That threshold is our practical test, not an industry standard. It exposes the classic cable-management mistake: treating eight unrelated cables as one permanent object.

Build two zones instead. The fixed zone contains the power strip, monitor power, dock, and equipment that rarely leaves. The active zone contains phone charging, headphones, a laptop lead, and anything you unplug weekly. Use clips for a fixed presentation point and reusable ties for cable coils that move. How important is under-desk clearance compared with hidden cables?

Clearance wins because a hidden cable can still interfere with your body or chair. OSHA’s workstation checklist asks whether thighs have clearance under the work surface and whether legs and feet have sufficient forward clearance. NIOSH also recommends avoiding over-reaching and awkward postures.

Give the point only when hanging loops, power bricks, and adapters sit outside the normal knee and chair path. Sit at the desk, place both feet where they naturally land, then roll the chair backward and turn it slightly. If your knee hits a brick or a caster collects a cable, the setup fails even if the front view looks perfect.

Do not tighten a route until it resembles a guitar string. A small controlled curve is evidence that the cable is not carrying a structural load. Slack should be placed where motion happens, not allowed to puddle on the floor.

How do the score bands change what you should fix first?

Fix the lowest-scoring functional category, not the most visible flaw. An 8 with a messy charger end is better than a 9 with a strained power connector. Use the band below to decide whether you need a touch-up, a routing pass, or a complete reset.

How do you raise your score in 15 minutes?

Spend the first five minutes on power, the next five on movement, and the last five on access. Unplug equipment you can safely power down. Remove obsolete leads. Place the power strip and adapters according to their instructions. Route the supply cord away from feet and pinch points.

Next, take the desk and monitor through five full cycles before tightening anything. Finally, separate daily cables from fixed infrastructure. The biggest mistake is optimizing the camera angle while removing serviceability. People overtighten bundles, hide a warm or damaged cord, fasten cables across moving joints, or make one giant sleeve that must be dismantled when a single charger changes.

The second mistake is adding more organizers before removing dead cables. Every unused lead increases volume, identification time, and places where a bundle can snag. The third is forcing every cable into the same product. Trays hold infrastructure, clips present active ends, sleeves simplify parallel runs, and reusable ties control coils.
